South Essex Golf Club is set up to make it as easy as possible for anyone who wants to play golf to come and enjoy this wonderful game all year round. We have all the facilities you need to help you improve your game. Come and use our 12-bay floodlit, covered driving range any time between 9am and 9.30pm, seven days a week, or practise your short game in our dedicated chipping area and putting green. Trolleys and a fleet of 20 buggies are available to hire, with changing and shower facilities in the clubhouse.
South Essex is made up of three 9-hole loops, the Heron, Hawk and Vixen courses, which can be configured in different combinations to give you a different challenge from one visit to the next. The course is long, the Heron and Hawk combination measuring over 7,000 yards, and there’s also a good smattering of water, trees and bunkers to favour accuracy over length. With excellent drainage and buggy paths on nine holes, the course remains playable all year round.
The 3rd on the Heron course is a long, 462 yard par 4 which demands courage and accuracy. You’ll need a good drive to carry up the gently undulating fairway and leave you with a view to the green. The target is protected by a large oak tree to the left and a ditch across its front, so your second needs to be precise for line and length, especially as the green is two-tiered, so where you land could be make or break.
The 7th on the Hawk course poses one of the toughest challenges of all the holes at South Essex. A 421 yard par 4, it starts from a slightly elevated tee position, from where you can see the challenge. Any drive ending up on the right hand side of the fairway will leave a blind approach shot to a well-protected green, but with the fairway sloping left to right, you need to work hard to keep the ball where you want it.
The Vixen course concludes with a 565 yard par 5, which offers genuine birdie possibilities. A good drive will bring the double reward of a fantastic view down the gently sloping fairway towards the green, plus the possibility of a shot at the green in two. It needs a big second shot, though, and with the green presenting a narrow, protected target, it’s a big risk and reward hole to complete your round.
“Amazing club, renewed my membership 3 years in a row and i don’t plan to leave! Great atmosphere, great holes to play and always the best service” – W.D
